In the upcoming days I plan to delve into discussing the Mets and the upcoming 2009 season. Maybe I’ll wait to hear Jerry Manuel’s motivational speech before the Mets head up north this week. At this point in the spring, almost all the roster spots are locked up and have been for a while. The only thing really up for grabs is really the last spot in the bullpen.

Speaking of the bullpen, according to Adam Rubin’s blog at the Daily News, the Mets held off on trading Brian Stokes to the Tigers for 27 year old utility 2B/OF Ryan Raburn. Marcus Thames’ name had always been mentioned in rumors between the Mets and Tigers but Raburn would have been involved in this swap. I personally like having Stokes as our long man out of the pen. He did a pretty good job last year when he wasn’t overused.

My thoughts on the upcoming Mets season and the new Citi Field were summed up perfectly by the brilliant Ashley Shaeffer:
“I had a dream about this moment… When I was making love… to my wife Donna. On top of her; powerful thrusts, filling the sultry night air. Heavy breath. My son Gabriel walked in, little boy. My wife sprung out of bed and said “No, Gabriel! Leave!” And I said “No, honey, shut your mouth, let him watch.” Let him watch what is being consecrated here. And I want the people to watch what is going to be consecrated here. And I will bring my son down here, and he will watch.”

i wouldnt trade Stokes for for Raburn. i like that he is right handed when our bench is prodominatley left handed, but we have no pop coming off the bench, depending how they split time with Ryan Church and Fernando Tatis, but if we were going to trade Stokes or anybody off the Mets roster for a right hand bat off the bench, it better be for some pop.

What i dont understand is why the Mets didn’t offer a contract to Damien Easily. he can play multiple positions, is right handed, and as we have seen offers pop off the bench. instead we have to settle for Alex Cora and Marlon Anderson who are essentially the same player. i dont get it
