Over the past few games I’ve noticed when an opposing player hits a homerun at CitiField the fan who catches it has thrown it back. I think its a nice gesture to show we don’t want their homeruns, but yet again why do we have to copy an age old tradition from another team.
The fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago have been doing this forever. It annoys me in the same way we copied the Sweet Caroline song the last few seasons from the Red Sox. What’s next a monument park behind the centerfield bullpens to honor our former Mets players? Although honoring them somewhere in the ballpark would be nice.
Not that there were many opportunities to at Shea, but I don’t recall many people throwing back homerun balls from the picnic area or the stands that were in fair territory at Shea stadium when a homerun was caught by a fan.
Again, I think it is a fun thing to throw back the homerun but let’s all remember we’re copying Cubs fans and I don’t think we want any their “winning traditions” started at CitiField. I don’t think there should be any pressure for a fan to throw the ball back either. If you’re lucky enough to catch a homerun ball I say do what you want with it, without getting booed. Hopefully we can eventually start our own traditions at CitiField. PS I’m not going to even start getting into the three tier wave which happens while it’s an important part of a close game in later innings.

First off, I think there should be a rule that if you are seen doing the wave during a game where the Mets are not up by 5 runs or more, you should be banned from Citi Field for the entire season.
As for throwing the ball back, I know that Wrigley is known for it, but I thought that this was common at most ballparks… am I wrong? I just thought we didnt see a lot of it because Shea didnt have many seats out there.
I agree with you completlet DOm. At one point a couple of years back met fans were doing the roll call alla the bleacher creatures at yankee stadium. The Mets need to have a tradition of there own not someone elses.
