Dan Murphy broke out beautifully tonight with the help of what else, instant replay. The Mets are now 4-4 in winning calls with the use of instant replay on the season. Murphy went 3-4 with 5 RBI’s and a controversial 6th inning home run that broke a 3 all tie. The question was whether the ball hit the Subway sign out in right or not. It was very hard to tell on TV even with replay. Adam Dunn definitely gave up on the ball in right, but with a white ball on a yellow subway sandwich sign the umps must have had a different angle to over turn the initial ruling of a double. Well sometimes the Baseball gods shine upon you.
Johan Santana once again wasn’t perfect, but his 11Ks carried him through 6 innings despite 6 walks and 3 runs allowed. He’s now 7-2 on the year.
Gary Sheffield continues to rake the ball, plating two runs in the first inning. I’m keeping my fingers crossed hoping he can sustain this while playing everyday. It can’t last too long for a 40 year old without getting hurt or slumping severely, can it?
After losing four straight last week, where the world seemed to be caving in, the Mets have now won 5 of 6. They’ve gotten “healthy”(not physically) off the Nationals. Let’s remind ourselves it was the Nationals, but good teams beat up on bad teams, right? So I’ll take it. Back in first place by half a game after the Phils lost to the Marlins tonight. The fish head to CitiField for a three game set after an off day tomorrow.
