Mets drop another to the Bucs

Two losses in a row now to the Pirates. There is only so long you can continue to win with mediocre talent. The injuries finally seem to be catching up with the Mets. I mean Luis Castillo and David Wright are the only starters in the lineup from opening day. I love Fernando Tatis, but is he really our number five hitter right now? I really miss the speed and excitement of Jose Reyes and the under appreciated consistency of Carlos Beltran.

I really miss how good of a third base coach Manny Acta was. Razor Shines seems like a great hype guy in the locker room but as far as sending runners he has not been good. He sent Jeremy Reed home, then tried to hold him up when Nate McClouth playing shallow, threw him out at the plate on a Castillo single.

You never want to make excuses with injuries but from this flu/virus thing to the non-stop injuries, another tonight to Ramon Martinez (thumb), the Mets have been decimated. Well the question will be asked how long Omar can wait to pull the trigger on a deal. Unless the team really goes into a tailspin or there are setbacks to Reyes and Beltran I think he will wait it out. Good pitching always beats good hitting, I’d rather see Omar do something in that category rather than unnecessarily over pay for a mediocre offensive player.

Mike Pelfrey will face former Yankee Ross Ohlendorf who’s been decent this year. 5-5 with 4.45 ERA. I wonder how many people will show up in Pittsburgh, it looked like a minor league game as far as attendance goes. The crowd was announced at 10,459 but there had to be less ,as the Penguins were also playing tonight in the NHL finals.

I really miss the speed and excitement of reyes too, even when he is in the lineup.

The injuries are piling up. Bench players might overachieve for a while, but eventually they’ll come back to earth. Sheffield doesn’t look good running lately, you have to think Jerry would not be playing him much (if at all) if it wasn’t for so many other guys hurting worse. That worries me. We’ve gotten some great performances out of Sheff, much more than I expected, but you can only go to the well so many times. I didn’t expect to see Fernando Martinez up this soon, that’s got to be another sign of how badly the Mets are hurting. Hopefully Beltran, Reyes, and Church can get back in there soon and help out.

But for all that I agree with Dom, I don’t want Omar to make a panic move and overpay for some mediocre hitter. If anything I’d rather see the Mets add another starting pitcher, and there might be some relative bargins at the All-Star break. Every team has injuries and you can’t make excuses for dropping two in a row to the Bucs, but overall the Mets have done a pretty decent job holding things together.

I agree I miss Manny Acta at 3rd base.

I’d like to see the Mets play more small ball, some more steals, bunts, etc. They need to manufacture runs with all these injuries.

And yes, despite the injuries, the Mets are still hanging tough!!
