Redding, Wright On

It seemed like a long time since the Mets have won a ball game. Tonight was a much needed victory as the Mets prevailed in 10 innings over the Nationals 3-1.It wasn’t pretty but there’s nothing like playing the worst team in baseball team to make you feel better about yourself.

From a pessimet perspective though, you can’t be too happy that the Mets did not take advantage of multiple scoring opportunities that were given to them during the game. 2nd and 3rd no out in the 5th, bases loaded in the 8th produced nothing. David Wright, who has been given some major flack on this blog, came through with a clutch two run double in the 10th. Wright went 4-5 tonight and he’ll need to stay hot to carry this team during this difficult stretch.

Tim Redding finally came through with a strong pitching performance, going six solid innings of one run ball against his former team. I have said this all along but I really think Redding will be an asset to this team. It was a big start for him after two lousy performances. Bobby Parnell continues to impress. J.J. Putz will not be as missed if Sean Green can keep up his recent superb pitching. He’s retired the last fourteen batters he’s faced, including three in a row tonight. Francisco Rodriguez is the man and remains perfect in save opportunities.

Yes it’s the Nats but we desperately needed a win and I will gladly take it. Bottom line is when this team gets a good starting pitching performance, we usually win thanks to a solid bullpen behind them. It will be harder to score with the injuries , but starting pitching wins games, great job by Tim Redding tonight.

A healthier John Maine will take the mound tomorrow against Long Beach, New York native John Lannan at 7:05p.
