Season in Balance

The Mets dropped below .500 for the first time since May5th and have now lost four in a row as they went down to the Brewers 10-6. Fernando Nieve’s string of impressive starts was snapped has he allowed three runs and eleven hits in three and third innings. The Mets battled back and got it to within 3-2 after rookie Casey McGehee dropped a routine pop fly but the rookie made amends by hitting a grand slam that made it 7-2 and all but slammed the door.

“We’re a below average team. Period,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. The Mets fell three games behind the Phillies and a half game behind the Marlins and are now in third place in the N.L. East.

The question in the upcoming weeks for this organization’s upper management is are you giving up on the season. If no major move is made, you’re telling your fans the season is not ours, let’s look towards next season. The season is in the balance right now and in the games leading up to the all star break. I will be extremely disappointed if a team with a better record in the N.L. makes a major move before the trading deadline and Omar and this organizations stands pat.

Johan Santana will go tonight looking to get the team back on track, as a win is so desparately needed. He will be opposed on the mound by Mike Burns.

i don’t think the season is in the balance. i actually think it’s lost. i could be wrong, but they aren’t a .500 team that’s showing signs of waking up. they’re a .500 team that’s been showing signs of dysfunction and breaking down.

omar will stand pat – his hands will be mostly tied. unless he becomes a big seller to get prospects, which will write off the season entirely. he can’t trade the farm to win now, and it’s hard to get replacements for players when we just don’t know how long they’ll be out (see almost every injury this year). in October when the players are on the golf course and we’re watching other teams in the playoffs, we’ll say in hindsight that we should have picked up a replacement 1B, a CF, a couple of SPs, an 8th inning guy, and a SS (and who knows what else).

The Yankees just acquired Eric Hinske for a couple of players believed to be equal in value to the tuna sandwich that I just ate for lunch. Okay, so actually one of the 2 minor leagueres has pitched fairly well in Single A this season, but still… Hinske plays first base and outfield… Hello, Omar!!!!
