Glass Half Empty

So at 39-42 the Mets have played 81 games, that’s officialy half of the 162 game schedule. It seems like it’s been a lot longer, what with the emotional roller coaster this season has been. The bad April, the great May, the horrendous June and all the injuries and terrible losses in between.

At this point, halfway through the year though I can’t even get on the team too much. It’s not like we’re at full strength losing with our best players on the field. Yes, you can be angry at the terrible way they’ve lost games, but in reality that’s a by-product of all the injuries this team has sustained. I hate to say this but in some way we’re lucky to only be three games under .500 and only four and a half games out of first place. But we really should be better than that because of the cruel way we’ve lost games this season, just look at the featured news section and the 8 games we should have won. But imagine any other team losing three of their top four hitters,2/5 of their starting rotation and their top setup man to injury and tell me where they’d be. Do I sound like too much of an optimist?

Maybe I’ve just resigned to myself to the fact that things won’t get any better any time soon. I mean is Ollie P really going to turn things around? No, things will remain the same till we at least get Reyes and Beltran back or if Omar can pull off a decent trade. People downgrade the emotional boost getting a new offensive player and teammate can bring to a team. We’ve already missed out on Mark DeRosa, Eric Hinske and Scott Hairston. Supposedly the Mets had interest in Hairston, but that doesn’t cut it for me. Unfortunately, when I look at Omar’s history and the way things have gone this season it doesn’t look like anything significant will happen for a third consecutive season during the trading deadline.

So I’ve resigned myself to accept losing now. It sucks, but it is what it is, the sooner we all accept it the less anger we’ll all have when this team continues to fail. Hey we can all pull for an underdog while paying championship prices. You can’t expect a team with mediocre talent to be in first place, you can’t put a square peg in a round hole folks. So until this team gets healthy or something drastic happens the glass is pessimistically half full.

Of that half full glass, we’ve played the empty half so far. Here’s to the second half being the one that’s full of water (or champagne)

Of course we’re paying championship prices, this is New York. We pay championship prices on everything, from rent to Starbucks. even the Dollar menu at fast food places is often jacked up. Hell, discount movie vouchers often come with the subtext ‘$1 surcharge in Manhattan’.

I put a lot of blame on the games we should’ve won on the manager, but Omar won’t return my calls about replacing him.

I can only hope that a terrible 2009 will lead to lower ticket prices in 2010. I am a season ticket holder and I am getting killed. No game should cost over $100 per ticket.

I agree with the ticket prices being through the roof. the team wasnt willing to spend in the offseason..I have a feeling many a ticket holder won’t continue next year..you have to expect a decline in prices next season especially if the season continues the way its going
