Comfortably Numb

So how many of you out there have officially lost hope? As every day passes, things seem to get worse for the Mets. One, they keep losing in terrible fashion and two the Phillies keep winning. There are pretty much no signs that things will be getting better any time soon.

Just sixteen days ago on July 3rd we were two games behind first place. The Phillies were coming off being swept by the Braves and were playing horrible baseball at home. The Mets went into Citizens Bank ballpark, Rodrigo Lopez, Jamie Moyer and Joe Blanton were starting and Jimmy Rollins was 2 for his last 30. We know the Mets got swept and both teams have been racing in opposite directions ever since.

There seems to be a sense of numbness amongst Mets fans nowadays. An acceptance of sorts has taken place. An acceptance that maybe it isn’t meant to be. Some Met fans can’t stay awake and are already dreaming of 2010. Joe D at Metsmerized is ready to show Omar the door. A few people still have hope but realize time is not on our side anymore.

Personally, I really do think it’s almost time to start thinking about next season. Even if everyone comes back healthy, was this team a championship caliber squad? I don’t think it was. I think our grave has already been dug by the deficit we’re in right now. I really hope I’m wrong.

Omar and the organization decided to sit back and hope this team could tread water before making a deal. To me that’s a loser’s mentality, this team needed reinforcements desperately before the toughest stretch of games of the season in June, against the best teams and the organization sat back and watched it happen. Yes, an argument could have been made what were we really going to trade for, there was no one trade that would solved the problems. But, if a trade was made earlier on, even for a relatively decent every day player then it would have not only given an emotional boost to the team but it would have signaled to everyone that the organization has not given up on the season. To me when they didn’t make any moves early on, it signaled the season was over. We got lucky when the Phillies were losing for a bit, otherwise we’d be closer to 15 games out right now. I hate to say this but if the same thing happened to the Yankees they would have made at least three trades by now, why because they actually are committed to winning every season, yes they’ve made some panic moves too but I’d honestly rather go for it and see what happens than take the sit back approach. For the Mets it’s too late now.

Unfortunately it feels like we’re sinking slowly in quick sand and our head is barely above ground. The organization could have thrown us some rope but decided, hey you’ll figure a way out.
