“Hey Omar, I Guess You Read My Post!!!

After numerous “investigations” and definitely after reading my “Omar Finally Catches A Break, Courtesy Of Tony Bernazard…” post (although I doubt he’ll openly admit to being a reader of pessimets.com), Mr Minaya has proven that he can follow instructions:

A Message from Mets General Manager Omar Minaya
I wanted for you to hear directly from me today regarding an update on the investigation of Tony Bernazard, our Vice President of Player Development.

Prior to a series of articles published in the media, our Baseball Operations and Human Resources departments had begun looking into several matters involving Tony. Once those reports became public, we accelerated our investigation. We wanted it to be thorough and complete it as quickly as possible while still being fair to Tony. That process concluded over the weekend.

Yesterday, I met with Tony in person to have a frank conversation about what we had learned following interviews with numerous people. I also wanted for Tony to have the opportunity to give his side of the story.

After meeting with Tony, and giving a lot of thought to the facts, I came to a decision on Tony’s status which I shared with Ownership last night. My recommendation was that we needed to part ways with Tony, as his behavior in his interaction with others was inconsistent with our organization’s values. Ownership agreed with my assessment and accepted my recommendation.

I spoke with Tony this morning and informed him of my decision to terminate his employment with the Mets.

Personnel decisions are never easy. And one can’t make them without giving it a lot of thought. It’s even harder when you know someone as I do Tony. Tony and I go back a long time. He is a dedicated baseball man who loves the game, someone I like and respect, and someone who has contributed to the Mets. In the end, however, I just told him I couldn’t leave him in his position after all that had transpired.

As General Manager of the Mets, I am fully accountable for our Baseball Operations department — on and off the field — and stand by this decision.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Mets.

Please Don’t Take This The Wrong Way Readers But….
I TOLD YOU SO!!!! DAMN I’M GOOD!!! Now If Omar Could Just Consider Me For The Open Position!!!
Hell, Create A New Position… James Sweeney:  The Met Fan, With The Master Plan!!!

THE HEAT IS OFFICIALLY OFF OF OMAR AND HIS DICTATORSHIP NO LONGER COMES UNDER QUESTION!!!

(Now I Need To Predict Who Will Be Traded & Who Will Stay: David Wright or Jose Reyes.?…  In Depth Article Soon To Come)

But Back To BernHazard’s Firing…
I Am A Bit Disturbed That Omar Didn’t Quote Word For Word From My Pre-written Speech During Today’s Conference! Especially Parts Such As:
1. Failing To Call Himself “The Almighty Met Man”
2. Not Stating That The VP Of Player Development Wasn’t Developing Players
3. & Not Announcing, Mets in 2010!
But then he probably didn’t want to cite me word for word  fearing a plagiarism claim from yours truly…
It’s ok Omar, you have my permission for next time when you announce changing the teams name to Los Mets permanently!

All kidding aside,
Now that the hazard from the clubhouse has been removed, let’s concentrate on tonights game for our hazard of a team.
Yes, optimism is in the air! But here at pessimets.com, my position follows that of the site… Pure Met Pessimism!
We get pummeled by the lowly Nationals, a team whose season loss record is on pace to be one of the worst in baseball history. Way To Go D.C.!
Then Johan the Great was outshined by a man who has already cemented his legacy as a great Met hurler by he name of Mike (takes us to the World Series) Hampton.
Then suddenly, maybe it was seeing Kazuo Matsui smile in another jersey, the Mets bats come alive as if it was WWII! Dropping bombs and taking 2 of 3 from the ‘Stros & Japan Man.

Now there appears to be hope that the Mets can turn things starting tonight as they embark upon a new series against the Rockies.
Can the Mets tap the Rockies and win 3 games in a row? Or will the Rockies stand strong and crush any future hopes?
Well, since my post season dreams have already been crushed, forever a true pessimet, I think these games means JAK-SQUAT!
But allow me just break this game down for you from my complex, complicated and not-so-normal point of view:

Monday — RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (7-9, 3.85) vs. LHP Oliver Perez Oliver Perez (2-3, 7.68), 7:10 p.m.
Oliver Perez = Heartbreaking Loss, Predicting COL 5 – NYM 4

Tuesday — RHP Jason Marquis (12-6, 3.49) vs. RHP Mike Pelfrey Mike Pelfrey (7-6, 4.99), 7:10 p.m.
Jason Marquis, despite being listed as day-to-day, will continue to pitch better with 3 fingers than Pelfrey can with a complete hand, Predicting COL 3 – NYM 1

Wednesday — RHP Jason Hammel (5-5, 4.28) vs. LHP Johan Santana (11-8, 3.12), 7:10 p.m.
Johan the Great will pummel Jason Hammel comparitively, but Mets bats will keep Johan biting his fingernails, Predicting COL 2 – NYM 3

Thursday — LHP Jorge De La Rosa (8-7, 4.78) vs. LHP Jonathon Niese (1-0, 4.08), 12:10 p.m.
Niese will be strong but lack of offense and Razor Shines swatting flies as he decomposes over at 3rd base will send mixed signals and Mets will be crushed, COL 5 – NYM – 0

So there you have it, the Rockies will reign supreme over the Mets and Omar Minaya will still find a way to trace the losses back to BernHazard and not himself!
Omar will call it a lack of player development due to BernHazard, perhaps will claim the media circus surrounding BernHazard affected his players psyche, who knows, WHO CARES!
The Mets will continue to lose with so many players on the DL, with such a clear lack of leadership, with a team that simply doesn’t know how to enjoy the sport, players that care more about their individual stats then the teams…. Maybe what I’m about to say will strike a nerve in some reader’s but hopefully this message will get across to Omar (since we found out he is a reader)…

I Direct this to the entire 2009 New York Mets staff…

Do you guys know that there is another baseball team in New York City? They aren’t too far away either! By car, just cross either the Throgs Neck or Whitestone Bridge. By train, take the 7 to Grand Central and transfer to the 6 uptown!  Both teams have a lot in common this year: high salaries, new stadiums, choke artists, pitching problems, management confusion, receiving a fair share of boos from New Yorkers… But there is 1 majodifference between the them. That other team has a winning record guys! That’s right, they are battling for 1st place in a division that is no cake walk. And you know why? And I firmly believe this!  They actually believe that THEY ARE A TEAM! They hang out together, they have post-game rituals, they joke around in the dugout, music is blasting, pitchers protect their hitters, THEY HAVE CHEMISTRY!!!
It pains me a bit to say this, but damn, they are good! They are… A TEAM!!!  Even before the disabled list began to grow, our boys just had no spark in them. They seemed bland, lacking personality, lacking energy, lacking what is most important for teams to succeed… NO APPARENT LOVE FOR THE GAME! They love the money, they love their own statistics, but love for ther team and the game of baseball was something so obviously missing to me!!!  Gary Sheffield touched on the teams lack of enthusiasm and love for the game when he joined the clubhouse this year. The lack of camaraderie continues to be made apparent following release of the BernHazard story. And the greatest sign that what I’m saying is right can be found at their new stadium aka Corporate Field. Where the tribute to Jackie Robinson, in my opinion, takes up too much room. Where are the pictures of the ‘69 Mets? Where’s a banner of Orosco throwing his glove in the air? Keith preparing to scoop a ball at 3rd? Piazza preparing to lift the city with a homerun following 9-11? Doc winding up? Darryl breaking the outfield clock in St. Louis? Ray Knight rounding 3rd? Where is the orange and blue paint DAMMIT!!!!!!
This stadium is a direct reflection of this team. A group of individuals who’d rather than lead the way and pave a new path… Fall victim to their own stats, their own earnings, are more concerned with making the All-Star team while playing for what one ESPN analyst recently called “a Triple-A team”!!!

In Summary….The players, just like the stadium, have disassociated themselves from the team.

I’m gonna go take a long walk now and not even watch this game on tv… Until next time…It was nice chattin’ with you all!!! Cheers!

I must say that although the authors style is a bit unorthodox, Mr Sweeney is entertaining and makes one hell uv a good point with the Yanks. btw, the Mets did win tonight b/c of Fernando Tatis’ homerun… you’ may have predicted the bernazard firing but not a Mets win….

  2. Nick on Monday 27, 2009

Nice article. I’ll tell you where I disagree with you though:

I think chemistry in baseball is vastly overrated. It’s used as an excuse when a team is underachieving and it makes for a good story when a team is performing well. But in any regard it’s effect is completely overstated.

It’s not that the Yankees have more team chemistry than the Mets; it’s that they have better players with 10+ HR and ERA’s under 4 who aren’t on the disabled list.

You only hear about chemistry in hindsight which to me makes it backwards just like the old “Jose Reyes is great when he’s having fun out there” line that Mets announcers always use. Nooooo Jose Reyes is having fun because he’s playing great, not the other way around.

A writer I read frequently summed it up best: “Chemistry is nothing but a well-timed 3 run homer”.

  3. Negative Ned on Monday 27, 2009

Wow…I don’t agree with everything here but you clearly did more work for this post than I do in a full day sitting in my ‘cube. Nice work getting everybody commenting, that’s what this is all about. I have to admit I’m looking forward to arguing with you about trading Reyes or Wright…

Omar is losing it, no question, and I can’t defend all his moves, but if 3 of your core players are on the DL there’s no amount of teamwork, passion for the game, or whatever that will make up for it. Sorry. In NYC somebody always has to take the fall for a bad season, even if no one individual is really to blame. I would argue that Omar has made some bad moves and missed out on some good chances, but he didn’t cause anyone to land on the DL.

Nick is dead right. Intangibles like “chemistry” are the kind of things that outsiders talk about after the fact to explain what they saw happen on the field. We don’t know what goes on in a locker room, let alone in a player’s head. We’d like to think that everyone on team is a great guy and loves his teammates. That’s a nice, feel good story, but it doesn’t really matter. It might not be true in football or basketball, but baseball teams can and have succeed with star players hating each other and everyone around them (Kent and Bonds on the 2002 Giants, for starters). Corey Sullivan, Daniel Murphy, and Jeremy Reed might be great guys and get along really well with everyone (or not, who the hell knows?), but unfortunately they’re not very good ball players right now, and if you have to depend on them everyday then your team probably stinks. They’ll have their moments, but you wouldn’t want them to have to carry the team too often. That’s what matters. Would you bet on the Phils to do anything if Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins all got hurt at the same time? I’m not saying that that scenario is exactly what’s happening to the Mets, but you get the point.

James Sweeney’s game result predictions record:
    0-1

  5. Dominic Pinto on Monday 27, 2009

Love the posting by Sweeney, lot of work there. Although I do say winning creates chemistry not vice versa. Also Omar isnt smelling so nice after that press conference so maybe he isnt the genius we all thought he was lol
