I Won’t Spend Money on the Mets

So I’ll be going to the game tonight with a ticket that was bought when Mets fans still had silly playoff dreams roaming through our heads, in other words a long time ago. A Friday night vs. the Phillies seemed like a great idea. It’s pretty funny how people can’t give away their tickets anymore. Do you think the Mets front office would have cut prices on certain seats by 50% if they were in the middle of a playoff race? Doubt it.

Tonight may well be the last game I go to till next year. Odd to say in August, but most likely true. So in a final act of defiance and to turn my displeasure into action, I have vowed Not to buy anything at the game tonight. Now this may not seem like anything big, but this is coming from someone who easily spends $50 at the ballpark every time I go. I will either find a way to eat and drink before the game or smuggle what I need into the game.

Yes, the Mets have a high payroll. Yes, everyone’s going to get a pass this season with the big injuries. But in many ways this was a typical Mets year. I hate to compare the two, but look what the Yankees did in the offseason. Granted they spent a ton of money but it’s paying dividends now, when their ballpark is still selling out, oh and they’re in first place.

The Mets conversely decided to “spend” on K-Rod. A wise move, but an absolute no-brainer considering the market price tag of 3 years 36 million. We then proceeded to pass on Manny Ramirez, Raul Ibanez,  Adam Dunn and Bobby Abreu. Minus Manny, all of the above mentioned names are having great seasons and would have fit in perfectly here. And it’s not like any of them got monster contracts. So you figure the Madoff scandal was worse than we originally thought. Seriously, the Mets have their own network and were opening a brand new ballpark. You know the money was going to be coming in. We also decided to hold off and not get reinforcements when they were so desperately needed. Ownership, it felt like dangled a life preserver from the cruise ship to the drowning team and fans and never tossed it over to us. We never go for that extra over the top push. Eh, maybe just as well this year with all the injuries, who knows.

So here we are. With seemingly nothing left to play for. The future looks bleak right now. Looks like we have to start thinking of what to do with the future and quick. I wonder if they’ll go out and spend next off season, in a weak free agent class. Like I’ve said before in troubled times like these, it’s not the players who suffer, or the front office or ownership. They are all getting paid very handsomely and half of them could probably care less about the season at this point. But’s it’s the fan like you and I, the fan who still watches every game from start to finish or listens to every pitch on the radio, fans like the one in section 530 aka the Dirty 530, who still show up to the games and who were heard on the telecast last night shouting “Show Your Tatis”. It’s fans like us who suffer.

Well I’ll be there once again tonight, with my Pessimets shirt on, not spending a dime on a team that wouldn’t spend that extra dollar for their fans this year.

You are a whiny little coward.

Be a man and support your team you little baby.

Good idea to not spend any money at the game tonight…y waste ur hard earned money when the Mets simply won’t.

I completely agree with the feeling you have regarding many of the Mets…”oh well, i am getting my payday so who cares about this season” Us fans bare the brunt of this embarassing season in the stands, at work (surrounded by philly and yankee fans) and even when wearing my met hat on the street (people have snickered at me and laughed).

I can’t help but feel this especially in regards to Reyes…now i don’t know how severe his injury is but I’d like to know for real how hard he is rehabbing and getting into shape. Spare me any fluff piece the mets leak about him working hard in PSL…

Between the money lost to Madoff, the mortgage payment on Citifield, the empty seats and unsold merchandise, and the bloated payroll, the Wilpons must be hurting right now. As fans of the team, we should all share in this act of civil disobedience with you. Refuse to spend any more money on the Mets until we force the Wilpons to sell a large share of the team to an outside party, someone that will demand accountability of management and not put their incompetent uncle/cousin/nephew in the C-suite.

It all starts with the owners. Bunch of Brooklyn Dodgers lovin, glorified real estates salesmen that they are. Oh…they sure do love those old Dodgers don’t they?. No clue on how to run a (modern) baseball team though. Yes…yes enough with the …”hey…they sepnd so much money on the mets…how could you blame the Wilpons??”. You’re damn right I can blame them!
There is such a thng as spending lots of money badly. Take my GM please! After 2 seasons in a row of total fizzle, collaps and finally choke in september from your “core players” didn’t he or anyone there see the signs?!?. In 06 this team hit its peak. That was it. 2006 should have been our year. The best team in the National league lost to the dinky 83 wins Cards. (shades of 88). Something about the makeup (chemistry) call it what ever you will, about our “core players” after 06 just didnt work. The Man behind all this is Minaya. It didn’t happen in 06 and it wont again with him as GM, Its over. Time to move on. Time to start….again. The best for the Mets now would be for the Wilpons to sell the team, the future is bleak now with them as owners (Madoff Made damn sure of that). At the very least this team needs new minds…..new ideas…..new people. Mets less the Wilpons, Minaya, Manuel = Hope.

With you 100% on the post. Its funny how reality comes out of nowhere to bite most Mets fans when it has been there for a very long time. Seriously, I remember having arguments with people over why not signing any of those guys (Abreu, Dunn etc) was the effective end of our season before it began. The problem with the Mets is the organization never puts a complete team out there on the field. Even if the Dan Murphy LF experiment didn’t turn out to be the epic fail that it is, how can you justify passing those guys up? Lets not forget, Juan Cruz could have been had as well and was passed on because “we didn’t want to lose a draft pick”. But they then re-sign Oliver “I walk the whole borough on a good night” Perez and lose out on taking some other teams draft pick (def worth much more than Perez).

If the fans that claim to be the “die hards” are the ones willing to give this organization a free pass due to the injuries, don’t count me as one of them. We started this season with an incomplete squad. I’m just glad they are out of it now and are no longer torturing us down the stretch like they have for past couple of seasons.

It doesnt or shouldnt matter where this team is in the standings, if you are a true fan you should follow the team day in and day out. I am not asking for you to pay to go to a game when you know ownership is trying to pad there own pockets after the whole Bernie Madoof disaster but watch on TV. Or if you have tickets to the game, go and have fun. Cheer for the poeple who wear the orange and blue and sometimes(uuuggghhh) black uniforms. JUST LIKE MYSELF AND MY FELLOW HOOLIGANS DO IN THE DIRTY 530. We were so proud last night as most of us lost our voices cheering for OUR Mets. Its times like this where you appreciate it even more when and if the team you root for actually wins a World Series.

Well thought out comments,…So I did follow through on my promise and I didnt spend any money tonight at CitiField….Didnt even pay for parking, (parked by the pitch n putt)..It wasnt easy watching my friends drink multiple beers but it was worth it in the end…At least they won, and we got to stick to a few Phils fans in a small way…
