The Final Straw: Santana Done?

Johan Santana has been scratched from his next start and could require season ending surgery according to mlb.com. He will see Dr. Altcheck tomorrow. His pitching elbow is in question and according to MetsBlog he has also been pitching with back problems since the all-star break.

Manager Jerry Manuel acknowledged being “terribly concerned,” that Santana had experienced pain in the elbow in recent starts though “not at this level,” the level he experienced in his most recent start, Thursday against the Braves. The manager also indicated Santana had not done normal between-starts throwing for an extended period.

“I don’t think anyone expects good news,” said Mike Pelfrey.

“You weren’t seeing the 93, 94 [mph] stuff anymore,” Francoeur said.

Francoeur himself is day to day with a torn ligament in his left thumb. He made a diving catch Sunday causing the injury.

It’s sad at this point. I feel really bad for Johan. The one warrior who carried this team on his shoulders early on. In spring training there were rumblings of Johan being hurt. He started off so ridiculously good and then all of sudden things started to become mediocre. Mediocre for Johana is still better than 90% of baseball though. I remember going to Yankee stadium and seeing Johan get destroyed in the Mets 15-0 loss. Right after that game I said he must be hurt. Looking back he must not have been right. At this point, even if it’s minor he needs to be shut down. Might as well throw Francoeur on the DL too. There is nothing to play for this season for Johan. Please get better soon.
