The Mets Fan’s Ultimate Dilemma

Back on September 1st I wrote about the dilemma which is looking more and more like a nightmare reality for Met fans. The baseball gods just won’t let us Met fans rest in peace even after our horrific season has come to a close. I am speaking of course of a possible Phillies/Yankees World Series. Now I’ve spoken to a few Met fans at length about this and many seem to be split. It has become a scary hot topic amongst the Met fans in the blogosphere. Ed Leyro over Mets Merized Online talks about Why We Can’t Have a Yankees-Phillies World Series. Lisa Swan of The Faster Times interviewed some fellow Met bloggers regarding this horrific subject.

It really is a tough choice. I mean if the Yankees win it all, we’re going to hear about it for a long time in our every day lives, by our family members, friends, co-workers etc. who are Yankee fans. We would be back to being second rate citizens in our own town until we win one. Worst of all A-Rod, the hero is leading the way. The arguments are strong to root for the Phillies here, just so we don’t have to deal with that on an everyday basis. At least now we can say the Yanks haven’t won the big one since the Mets World Series in 2000.

If the Phillies win it all, it only further cements the Phillies as not only the best in the N.L. East but the best in the National league, period. If they win back to back titles people are talking dynasty and deservedly so. We will have absolutely no firepower or ammo against some of the most obnoxious fans in the world, that is of course Philadelphia fans. They will have won three world series championships which gives them and their fans ultimate smack talk over us.

Personally, I hate to see either team win but I think I would rather see the Phillies win than the Yankees if it comes down to it. At least if the Phills win, we wouldn’t have to deal with hearing it on an everyday basis. It’s a small thing but at least it’s the National league winning. Also let’s not forget, and it’s the main reason why I would have to root for the Yankees to lose, it’s that we’ve all been hating the Yankees and their fans a lot longer than we’ve been hating the Phillies and their fans. The Phils rivalry is only really three or four years long.  Don’t get me wrong though, I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE BOTH THESE TEAMS and would love to see an all Cali World Series but with both teams up 3-1 now, the worst case scenario is looming. Ugh.

I cant root for the phillies. Us mets fans in south jersey not only have to deal with the the yankees fans who are fans because of fashion, we deal with real phillies fans from south jerZ. Believe me, they are more annoying. Im rooting yankees if it comes down to it, just like i was when it was ATL v. NYY.

there will always be yankees fans, there is no need to make new phillies fans.

but its just all a part of being a mets fan i guess.

btw, AGon, Abreu, Lackey = 2010 championship!

  2. Arulloc on Wednesday 21, 2009

Best case for me is Phillies in 7 so that they can win it in yankee stadium and ruin the inaugural season. I’m not even sure if I can bring myself watch any of that series.

  3. Brendan on Wednesday 21, 2009

Gotta root for the Stankies, although I’m gonna have a tough time rooting altogether. No team I hate more in this worls than the Phillies (obviously only in recent years) and that’s just a little more than I hate the Yankees. Bottom line is that this post season blows, and we’ve all hit solid rock bottom as mets fans this week.

  4. Todd on Wednesday 21, 2009

I live in grew up in new york, but now live in PA, so using your arguement, i don’t want to hear it from Phillie fans all the time…go yanks?

  5. gooolo on Wednesday 21, 2009

HAHAAH. lame Mutz fans, enjoy watching actual good baseball over the next two week. you’ve been reduced to discussing what team it less evil is very funny. the only reason mets fans are relevant is to discuss which other team they need to cheer for, what a bunch of losers. Might as well start cheering for the Pirates, they can finish 4th in their division too. Stupid Mutz are closer to the nationals then they are to the Braves, Marlins, or Phils. ahahaha. enjoy remembering 1986 cause there is no end in sight to the current Mutz downslide, hahahaah, go blow another 7 game lead, ahahahaa

  6. brendan on Wednesday 21, 2009

you gotta root for the yankees on this one. sure you’ll hear it. but its been a decade since they won and you STILL here it. at least among fans of my generation who grew up through the yankee dynasty, they truly believe they are something special and different, the chosen team if you will. win or lose they wont shut up. and the fact is, no matter how much i hate yankee fans generally, i have a lot of very good friends who are yankees fans. guys i really like. cant say that about a single philly fan. i hate each and every one of them. you cant POSSIBLY root for them. it will be extraordinarily painful for me to root for the yankees, but i’ll do it if they play philly.

  7. Davey Johnson on Wednesday 21, 2009

So you are rooting for a team full of players that talk shit about the one you like, over a team, that i can’t recall even mentioning us outside of 6 games we play them for some annoying little attendance stunt.

  8. Negative Ned on Wednesday 21, 2009

Yanks-Phils would be great baseball (think about that Phils line-up in Yankee Stadium), but it’s a worse case nightmare scenario for Met fans. I’d agree with Dom that it would be slightly less irritating for us if the Phils repeat, but it’s a terrible, terrible, choice either way. The classic lose-lose situation for Mets fans.

  9. The Coop on Wednesday 21, 2009

I agree, this is a nightmare scenario, but why they still care about the Mets, whose season was basically over since JULY is beyond me. If anyone has the inferiority complex, it’s those two teams’ fan base who feel the need to talk smack after all the years. I am going to pretend that baseball doesn’t exist and maybe, just maybe, swine flu will infiltrate both teams and they would never play. But I would have to side slightly towards the Phillies favor. Living in NY, we would hear about it every single day for the rest of our lives (then again, we hear about the Yankees more so every day anyway). Whereas with the Phillies, I don’t have a problem with them right now simply b/c I underestimated them and you know what, good for them. They need to distract themselves from the sorry state of affairs with their local sports anyway. Go Rangers!

  10. Greg on Wednesday 21, 2009

I would have to root for the Yankees, as horrifying as it sounds, for 2 reasons. First, because of the arguments placed by Dom. It would be brutal to have the Phillies win it 2 years in a row and really Yankee fans were going to be obnoxious regardless because they made the World Series and we didn’t. Second, I see the Yankees winning it all as benefiting the Mets in the free agent market. I would think the Yankees would be less likely to go and spend the big money on some of the big names like Lackey or Holliday when they just won a World Series with the team they have now. So it eliminates the need for the mets to outbid the yanks for these players.

  11. Bobby on Wednesday 21, 2009

I definitely see your point about the Yankees winning and having to hear about it every day. EXCEPT…

Your analysis is narrow-minded in that it only applies to NY based fans. Someone like me does not have to hear stuff like that on a daily basis. I live in Scranton, PA, which despite being the current home of the Yankees AAA team (and former home of the Phillies AAA team, ick, can’t we get the Mets or at least someone neutral), does not carry a lot of fans.

No, I would MUCH rather see the Yankees win. For one, whenever there is an article comparing/contrasting the Yankees/Mets, I always feel like “who cares, they’re not even in the same league”.

Secondly, if the Yankees win the old “well, you bought the championship” defense always applies. If the Phillies win, what retort could you possibly have? “Yeah, well your young core is better than our young core.” Obviously not.

  12. Brian on Wednesday 21, 2009

For me, I have to say I’d take a Phillies win over a Yankees win any day. I work overnights, and its hard enough listening to that arrogant Yankee fan Mark Maloosa on WFAN now. However, if Yanks win it, I will have no radio to listen to while I’m driving around all night from work, between the host Yankee fan and all the other arrogant, gloating idiots that will be filling the airwaves with their nonsense. If Philly wins it, though I won’t be happy BY ANY STRETCH, at the very least I’ll get to listen to a bunch of Yankee fans calling the station crying about their team every night, which will obviously bring me joy!!

  13. Glen on Wednesday 21, 2009

One of those teams has got to lose, and that in itself will make me happy.

  14. Rat on Wednesday 21, 2009

Mets fans need to face facts…The Phils ARE the best team in the NL east (for sure) and NL as a whole (more than likely).

  15. Howie on Wednesday 21, 2009

I have been a Met fan since their inception….but I am also a New Yorker, and have found no problem rooting for the Yankees in all cases except when they play the Mets.
How can anyone even think about wanting the Phillies instead?
The Yankees actually have some guys it’s easy to like: Tex and CC to start

  16. Greg on Wednesday 21, 2009

I think what we all need to consider is the fact that 1) we’re used to this scenario, and 2) Mets fans span across the United States.

For the Phillies to win the World Series (pending the NLCS), Mets fans across the country, like myself in D.C., look forward to years of Philadelphian torture, the degradation of baseball, and the ultimately demise of the United States as a modern power. Is this what you want?

Instead, if the Yankees win, at least Mets fans, long living underneath a veil of Yankee ignorance and oppression, know how to deal with this misery. Furthermore, a Yankee win will simply restore order back to the universe, where people got along, the dollar stayed constant, and Philly fans remained dejected and bitchy. I’d much rather have order restored than the upbringing of a new dynasty. One is enough…

  17. Jimmy the Kid on Wednesday 21, 2009

There is only one thing that we should root for here….. and that is tragic “We are Marshall” like accident where somehow both team’s buses or jets crash into each other in route to Philly at some point in the series.

Would it be too much to ask the good lord to take some members of each fan base as well ?

The Yankees need to win this one though, since bandwagon Philly fans shouldn’t be allowed to use the words dynasty in a sentence.

  18. srt on Wednesday 21, 2009

Sorry, can’t agree. This must be a perspective of a NY City resident surrounded by Yankee fans.
Living in Central Jersey, just as many Philly fans as Yankees – if not more this past two years.

I have a life long 40+ year Met fan ‘hate’ of all things Yankees. But rooting for the Phillies? Just not happening. In my mind, it will have to be the Yankees.

Do we really want to hear all 2010 – every time we play the Phillies – the ‘WFC 2009 Phillies’? All this year was enough for one lifetime….

there is no way in hell i can root for the phillly scum. i live in northeast jersey, but go to the philly area alot. there is a world of difference between yankee and philly fans. yankee fans have already won at least and have been marginally humbled by their recent postseason failures. philly fans have been annoying for as long as i can remember, even when they were terrible. now that they’re good, they’re intolerable. i’d love nothing more than the yanks to sweep the phils so they can celebrate at CBP and also see pedro get blased beyond recognition in the series. don’t get me wrong, i am far from a yankee supporter, but in this case, it’s a must. i really have no problem with most of the yankee players, but garbage like rollins, victorino and hamels annoy the hell out of me with their incessant trash talk. phuckthephills.

  21. TuxK on Wednesday 21, 2009

I’m sorry, but I have to say I gotta root for the Phillies. I live with three obnoxious yankee fans and cannot stand it. They are so cocky, and the worst part of it is that A-rod is doing it. I can’t stand yankee fans. They are the most arrogant fans in any sport. I hate Philly fans as well, but again i dont see them much and I hear smack talk non stop from a**hole yankee fans. Sorry, but I’m going with Philly. Next year when the mets play them, I will go back to hating them again, but for now I dont want to deal with an offseason on non stop bragging from ignorant, arrogant yankee fans

  22. jo joe on Wednesday 21, 2009

Living in North jersey and going to school in south jersey I have heard it from both fanbases and the philly fans take the cake at just being the worst kinds of human beings, let alone worst fans of all time. Don’t get me wrong, I despise the yankees and always have. But how could you possibly root against them when they are playing the phillies? Here are some clear reasons as to why we should all, as mets fans, suck it up and root for the hometown rival.

    - The Phillies play in Philadelphia, not NY how about we keep our city in mind.
    - They won OUR division and OUR National league, isn’t that enough?
    - Do you really want our division rival that we play 20+ times a year to have back-to-back championships and in turn having those fans at citi field talking smack every time.
    - Yankees already have 26, really whats 1 more? The Phillies have 2, same as us, 1 more and…well do the math.

    GO NEW YORK

  23. Bella on Wednesday 21, 2009

My ex, Kevin, a Yankees fan, had this problem in 86 when the Red Sox played the Mets in the Series. Since I am a Phillies fan, I have no problem. If my feet ever hit the ground again. We finally, after 59 years, get to redeem ourselves against the Yankees. GO PHILLIES!!!!

  24. Dominic Pinto on Wednesday 21, 2009

Ahh this post wouldnt be complete without our favorite Philly commenter, Bella….Well Bella Im sure you’re glad to see Ill be wishing the yankees to lose more than then phillies…Best case scenario the ANGELS take down the championship!

  25. jim on Wednesday 21, 2009

I will root for Phillies. They are a National League team. They are gritty and tough. Our Mets cannot even compare with them right now. The Phillies earned this repeat trip to WS. The Yankees still have that giant payroll (way bigger than Phillies). By adding Sabathia, Teixeira & Burnett, it will just mean the Yankees bought the championship again.

And also, as a New Yorker, I am so tired of listening to these obnoxious Yankee fans. Half of them do not even know anything about baseball and just started caring when they made the playoff.

Go Phillies – easy one for me.
