Dear Mr. Wilpon,
My name is Freddie and I am writing this letter to you as a very dissatisfied customer. I recently turned 29 and have yet to see the team I watch day in and day out to win a World Series. A team that plays in the biggest city of them all with all the resources to bring in the best quality players and give me, the paying fan, the best quality product. Instead I have to sit here and read emails back and forth from friends on who I would rather win the World Series, the bully from Philly or the Older brother from the Bronx which I envy. I’ve had it.
I go to approximately 15-20 games a season, I haven’t missed a home opener in12 years and I’m done until you prove me wrong. It’s time to look yourself in the mirror and say what kind of legacy do I want to leave in this town? Do I want to be known as the cheap, it doesn’t matter if we win or lose as long as there is a profit at the end of the day owner? Or do you want to be the owner that goes out and spends almost half a billion dollars on three players to ensure his team is the one that finishes on top? And you know what, that owner made a ton of money this season, A TON. If you spend money, you make money. Leave a legacy. Become that owner. You have all the resources, a brand new ballpark and a fan base that so desperately wants to win. Give it to us. Go out and get Roy Halladay, it doesn’t matter the cost. Go out and get yourself a big bat in LF, preferably Matt Holliday. Go and sign that pesky 2 hitter to play 2b in Chone Figgins. NONE OF IT MATTERS because at the end of the day your fan base is excited and willing to throw there money at you. They couldn’t give it to you fast enough. There is no need to reduce ticket prices people would spend to watch that team. With the the two best pitchers in baseball and the peskiest top of the lineup and the bop in the middle? But what do I know? I’m just a hard working civilian and can’t understand what goes through the minds of corporate gurus when it comes to this stuff.
Yours Truly,
Freddie Samii

I agree with you Freddie the Wilpons need to wake up and spend this off season…Not sure about Figgins…But if we can get A. Gon. or Roy Halladay then either sign Holliday(if you get Halladay) or Lackey (if you get A. Gon)…Add a scrappy guy or too like DeRosa or Jason Marquis we’ll be in great shape but as Ive always said the Mets go out and solve one problem of last years errors and dont address new needs…they never have…. I still think the Mets are still trigger shy from the Mo Vaughn Roberto Alomar Jeromy Burnitz fiasco…
I just threw out marquise names…they better not try and sell me murphy/cantu first base with joel piniero as there number 2 and angel pagan/mike cameron in left. I swear I will not go to one game next season. If they just try and patch up with tier B/C free agents.
Yes I will not be buying a pack next season either….Even if they go out and spend I probably wont buy a pack, but we have been suckered in before
I have to disagree with you guys here (sort of). You just can’t say that the Mets don’t spend. That’s just not accurate. Where does the payroll rank? It’s up there with the Skanks and the BoSox. The Beltran and Johan deals were both huge (if not record setting at the time). How the hell can you argue with the numbers? You could certainly argue that the Mets haven’t spent wisely, but not that they haven’t spent.
Having said that, the Mets definitely need to keep spending this off-season, and we’re right to expect a lot from the ownership. I know I pay a premium in beer and seat prices, etc, for being a fan of this team, but it’s worth it as long as the ownership is serious. This is New York, not Kansas City.
one more point…if anything the Mets need to be extra active this off-season. Even though the free agent class isn’t the greatest, small market teams are going to be hurting (we’ve all heard the rumors out of Cincy and Detroit), so the Mets have an awesome chance to throw their weight around. NYC is not recession proof at all, but we’re better off than a lot of places.
No I agree they do spend, but they dont spend enough and they dont spend especially in places where they need to..they will a hole but then neglect other holes…More accurately they need to spend more this offseason than in others past just as you said, because of the horrific season which wasnt all thier fault and their 2 biggest rivals making the world series by pulling off huge trades and signings…and the economy which will hurt other teams more thanthe mets
As I just predicted on another Mets’ message board:
I can’t get that excited, or make spending requests like a Christmas list like some fans. Especailly since the WIlpons/ Mets finances still seem up in the air, and they suddenly stopped spending and went for budget bargain players to try to fill out the roster and rotations last yr. Some better options were available. I am not expecting much at all. I refuse to set expectations that will not transpire.
I predict their hot stove off season to be more like a hot plate, or tastybake oven.
I am hoping I am wrong.
