Earlier today, Mike Francesa of WFAN radio reported the Mets have agreed to terms with Jason Bay pending a physical. The deal is reportedly worth 66 million over four years with an option for a 5th year that could put the total contract at 80 million.
I have to give a little credit to the organization here. They finally did something this off season. They stuck to their guns and didn’t over pay to get Bay, although he wasn’t exactly cheap. Also, the last time the Mets signed a big free agent that Boston passed on, it was Pedro, and that didn’t quite work out., although he was good early on. Even after this signing though, I believe there are still some big flaws with this team. Still the biggest concern is the starting rotation, something that has not been addressed AT ALL.
At this point we are looking at Joel Pineiro or a risky move like Ben Sheets or Erik Bedard. As the Mets have done in prior years, it looks like they will address one concern with a band aid and not address other problem areas that persist. I wish they spent a little more on Lackey than targeting Bay, but let’s see what our starting rotation will be, if it’s the same group as last season, it probably couldn’t get much worse but it definitely won’t be that much better.
All in all, a nice signing but this can not be our only significant move this off season, unfortunately it might be.
Possible Opening Day Lineup:
SS Jose Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, 3b David Wright, CF Carlos Beltran, LF Jason Bay, 1b Murphy/ Possibly Delgado, RF Francoeur, C Santos/ B. Molina.
Even though I dont agree with the signing of Jason Bay, Im glad the mets actually did something. Now can we please bring in as many arms as possible. I dont care qho they are, if you give all these guys cheap incentive laden contracts one or two them will pan out.
Also SIGN ORLANDO HUDSON. I do not care what you do with luis castillo, pay the man and bench his ass for all I care.
People want to say that Bay’s defense is questionable. Can he be slower and have less of an arm than Sheffield ? I think not. This is a huge improvement. Now they need to get pitching, and sign Molina.
I have convinced myself that Piniero will be good for us. His career numbers are shitty, a lot of time pitching in AL, but ever since he added a sinker he has become a more stable pitcher and knows how to get guys out. It seems like he had gained good command of it this past season.
Yeah Pineiro has been good, but how much of that is Dave Duncan…I have a bad feeling as soon as he leaves Duncan all his bad habits will come back after he gets the big contract
