Lowered Expectations

With almost exactly a month before pitchers and catchers report to spring training  I think most Mets fans are pretty disappointed with the offseason, especially after the Beltran news. Yes, signing Bay was a nice, but the starting pitching is what needed the most help this offseason,  I think most fans expected the Mets to get Lackey as well. The Yankees last year go out and make huge splashes and win the the World Series and here we are again second rate citizens going into 2010.

And while there’s still time for the Mets to make a few more additions, I’m sorry even if we get Pineiro, how excited can we really get? I think it’s time we start lowering expectations again for this team and organization. No longer are we Championship contenders going into the season, at this point I think we’re back to hoping for playoff contention. Do we have the talent? On paper we should, we have holes, but so do the majority of teams in the N.L. Let’s face it, if you’re a .500 team heading into September you’re in the running but it’ still very disheartening when the Washington Nationals make more quality additions to their team than the Mets do.

So time will tell, but until the Mets do something to change my mind, we are realistically the 2nd or 3rd best team in our division in 2010. I surely hope I’m wrong, but my expectations are officially lowered and the Mets won’t be getting any of my money for a ticket plan after this disappointing off season.

Read in the daily news this week that Big Pelf and Maine were a little upset about all the talk about having to go out and get a few pitchers, and that a lot of people have written the Mets pitching staff off. Maybe these clowns will train hard in the offseason and play like they have something to prove. Also talked about how they were all on board to having Molina as a catcher since he has yrs of experience and knows hitters. They cited the great job that he did with Lincy and Cain on the Giants. Hopefully these guys grow a sack, Ollie pitches better, we get Molina and they are a respectable unit again. Ollie is supposedly going through a rigorous offseason regiment as advised by Scott Boras in his quest for bigger paychecks and the next 3 yr deal…
