Pelfrey = #2

Big Mike Pelfrey is transforming before our eyes into that #2 pitcher we’ve all hoped he would become. Coming off of 2008 he was predicted by Tom Verducci to have a bad year in 2009, chronicled last year on pessimets.com here.

But those pitchers usually bounce back stronger the year after and so far Mike Pelfrey has done just that. He’s been dominant with three wins and a save thus far, and has been the best pitcher on the team, even better than Johan so far. Not sure if he has ace potential just yet but he’s definitely our #2 right now!

Jose Reyes had a four hit night, including a triple 2 RBIs and a stolen base. Fernando Tatis added insurance in the 8th with a 2 run pinch hit bomb. With Ike in there, Tatis can resume his normal pinch hitter role, where he is much more effective.

K-Rod closed this one out but still doesn’t have a save on the year. Ryota Igarashi was injured in the 8th with a strained hamstring, MRI tomorrow. Hopefully he’s ok, he’s looked pretty good in the bullpen.

All around quality win. The strong pitching continues, the offense is doing enough. Great to see Reyes on the basepahs. All in all, the Cubs coming in is exactly what the doctor ordered, they look listless. Hopefully the Mets can maintain this momentum throughout the homestand and make a nice run.
